Hey everyone. I recently got Guild Wars and have been playing through the original campaign. Now E/Me 12. My idea was to play all three in order and then delve into PvP. I have a couple of questions now as to how to go about things.

- When i get Factions and Nightfall, do i take THIS character though the main PvE story, or do i need to make a new one to start those?

- What is the best time to jump into PvP? Should i play some with the first game, or should i just wait until i've finished all three PvE games?

- Do people often have multiple characters? If so, is there an advantage? Do skills actually unlock for all characters on your account?

Thanks for any response. Great game and i'm glad i came over here from WoW. PvP will probably be my main interest, but really enjoying the original campaign so far.

Many people do have multiple characters. I myself have 8 different ones. You don't need to do it for different skills tho because you can unlock skills just by playing PVP. You can bring PVE characters to any of the games so you don't need to start a new one every time, but if you do that you will miss a small part of the story, nothing major tho. As far as PVP its really up to you. You probably would be a little better at it if you play PVE first just to get used to things but you can start a PVP only character that would have max armor and whatever weapons you want.

1. You can bring your existing character over or start a new one, it doesn't matter.

2. PvE and PvP are so different it doesn't matter which you do first, however, I reccommend doing a bunch of PvE first to unlock as many skills as possible.

3. Yes, most people have many characters. There is no advantage, but it is much more fun to have access to different professions. When you unlock a skill on a PvE character it is unlock for that character and all PvP characters on your account and heroes, not any other PvE character. Unlocking with balthzar faction only goes to all your PvP characters and heroes.

Remember, if you do PvP do NOT use a PvE character. PvP characters have access to everything unlocked on your account, so they will be much more verstile and have superior vigor runes and customized weapons, which many players never get (or do) for PvE characters.

Ooh, thanks for the replies. That really clears some things up. I planned on using my PvE character for PvP, but i'll create a different one then. Good tip.

You can, or you can create a new character to take through. The advantage of making new characters with different professions is that you can unlock those skills for PvP use. If you chose to make new characters in the newer chapters, I'd make chapter specific characters and make characters covering the 6 core professions in Prophecies, since you can unlock a ton of core profession skills in Prophecies by doing quests.

Play around in PvE for a while. You don't need to get through everything to be able to do well in PvP, but using PvE to get a feel for different skills & builds isn't a bad way to go.

Most people who play both PvE and PvP leave one character slot open for creating PvP characters. and use the rest to cover the professions for skill unlocking purposes. (Once you get going in PvP, you can also unlock skills and stuff by using Balthazar faction you earn in PvP) Skills unlocked by one character can't be used by another PvE character. But, you can use any skills, runes, and weapon mods you unlock on your account when creating a PvP character.

I'd like to tag a related question on here:

My understanding is that you can buy skills with Balthazar points in PvP, & in doing so you also unlock them & make them available for purchase for your current PvE character in that chapter.

What I wonder, is if you bought the the PvP skill pack from the GW online shop, does this have any effect, or is there a way for this to have an effect on being able to unlock skills & thus make them available for purchase by a character in PvE?

Incorrect.

When you unlock something with the Balthazar points in unlocks for every PVP character. If you unlock something in PVE, it too becomes available for any PVP character. If you buy the PVP skill pack, from what I understand, unlocks all those skills for all your PVP characters.

PVE will not be affected by what you can or cannot purchase by buying the PVP skill pack.

Well buying the PvP pack will unlock all the skills on the ACCOUNT, which means you can buy all skills at any skill trainer and you can learn skills with tomes (including Elites)

Unlocking - See wiki http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Skills

Though you might have to read it several times.

oops, forgot about the tomes.

With that in mind, I guess by buying the PVP skill unlock could help a PVE player who has non-elite or elite tomes to get those skills without having to hunt, fight, or capture them all.
